Some mornings lemon water is not the first thing I want to drink.  So why do I make sure I do?  Here are my top 5 reasons why.

1. Aids in digestion:
Lemon lushes toxins and starts your digestive system off right.  It tells your liver to produce bile which is an acid required for digestion.  This way when you eat following your water you have already primed the pump.  While you sleep your body works hard to cleanse and heal itself and this is part of the reason why we should not eat late at night.  Our bodies should be doing many things other than digesting, one important one is healing.  If I’m working through some sort of pain or sickness I try to give my body 12 hours at night to work on itself, but drink liquids that help like green juice and lemon water.

2. Vitamin C and Potassium:
Lemons are high in vitamin C which is a vitamin we must consume daily.  Our bodies can not make vitamin C which is great for your immune system, so make sure to get enough to maintain health and consume even more if you are fighting pain or sickness.  Potassium can help stimulate nerve and brain function, how about that!  This is absolutely something I  can use first thing in the morning.  How about you?

3. Alkalizes:
It is SO important to try to get your body back to it’s ideal PH.  This should be a constant consideration as disease and inflammation ONLY occurs when the human body is too acidic.  Fruits are alkalizing, but greens are even more powerful.  I put lemon in a good amount of my green juices.

4. Lymph:
Your lymphatic system is a major part of your body’s detoxification system and far too many people have slow moving sludge in there.  Lemon water helps by hydrating and  cleansing, both get your lymph fluids flowing more easily.  Another way is exercise, any kind will do.

5. Weight loss/maintenance:
Next time you feel hungry drink a glass of water.  I am constantly amazed at how much less hungry I feel after I follow this “rule”.  Sometimes our cravings can be so strong because we are simply dehydrated.  This may not kill the hunger completely, but the pectin which is a “hunger fighting” fiber should help.

I recently started putting lemon in the water I drink when I run/workout too.  Can only help right?

I juice fresh ginger with my masticating juicer and I can’t tell you how much more ginger I am consuming because I started doing this!

Here is my morning liter…
lemon:  3 tsp
ginger:  2 tsp
honey:  1 tbsp
